Gap

I have to say sorry for the late to post on our block blog. As the only international student in our blockcomm, I felt really thankful for your help and care in the first semister. It seems our happy memory of ours in sem1 has been mentioned enough by other members. To be different, I would like to say something that you may not know and something I still don't understand.

Firstly I need to declare that what I mention later is just for a better communication. I always trust that all misunderstanding can be dismissed by speaking out what you really think, rather than hide your mind to meet others' expectation.

The first interesting thing coming to my mind is the relationship between local and chinese. If you are in my position, you will feel interested too. On one hand, I see you guys are so kindly trying your best to help chinese students to be part of your activities. On the other hand, I will hear many discussion from chinese students about how to avoid joining the activities. Please don't say that chinese are so ideologism and selfish. Let me tell u the reason in my mind.

Although I have tried to deny, but I finally admit the culture gap between chinese and singaporeans is huge. Actually around half of the chinese students would like to join your life when they first come to NUS. They desire to 'try' your life, know your culture and even be part of your 'gangs'. While, as the time goes by, more and more Chinese students find they cannot keep going to their hope when they find they need to sacrifice night by night to be with you guys to show 'we are a team'. In our opinion, mostly, one should follow his or her heart in university life. We all experience around 10-year chinese education in which our personality are somehow restricted and our life are always arranged by our parents and our teachers. So we expect we can schedule our life in the university. However, the point is that sometimes local students tend to judge whether one person is friendly by whether he or she would like to join you. It seems reasonable since our real friends do be with us in the past. But I think(only my opinion), university students need a more mature relationship in which people need to respect the difference. This is not only useful to deal with the relationship between chinese and locals, but also realistic for everyone around us.

I still remember each time we join people for our activities, we may meet some embarrassed situation. You will find not all people would like to share their time with you, both for local and chinese. Furthermore, you always add "pls tell the valid reason if you cannot make it' when call for meeting. While, I have to say I really don't like this sentence. University activities, in my opinion, is not compulsory. Indeed, it is where you can continue your hobbies, where you can meet more people and where you enrich your life. You will always choose your activities based on your liking. I don't mean that we don't need to be responsible to our comm. That's totally wrong. What I'm trying to say is we need to figure out what is the 'valid reason'. If I feel really tired, is it a valid reason? If I felt what we do is not meaningful, should I keep doing and say nothing? If I felt our residentants have the power to choose whether they would like to join our activities, should I continue persuading them and make them embarrased? Frankly, we need to think whether the activities will benefit our friends or waste their time and then decide whether we have enough reason to persuade them to join us. That's what friends should do. Blockcom is a service agency, rather than an adminstrant. We can only to advertise to attract people. And most importantly, people have right to choose.

I admitted I'm in a bad mood when I write this one. But what I write is what I thought when I finish sem1. It may be a good chance to understand each other better for us. Hopefully, you can read my article in a positive way!!! You know, we never give up!!! We can be better!!!

Be Brave

If you feel like giving up now, don't. If you feel like breaking down, don't. We're so close to the end, we've been working hard (most of us) for this. Everyhing boils down to the few weeks ahead. This is our last stretch. Let's all give it our best shot so that when we look back, we know we've done our best and given it our all. Don't let this semester end with regrets and tears, but happiness and relief!

And when it's all over, its time to PARTAYYYEEEEEEE ~

Hell Yeah.

Hellos and Goodbyes!

Hello Eekers!

This is my first time blogging in our blog, and definitely will not be my last. =p

Anyway, as the first semester of uni life has come and gone quickly, so has my first semester in Block E come and passed too.

To start off, let's talk about Good Luck Supper. =)

 Colin giving a speech
 Playing Eeker's Risk
Girls taking a turn at pool

Sorry for the limited pictures, coz i dun have all of them and i just took them off facebook. Hehe.. Anyway, it had been another good event organised by the block comm. So good job guys! =) The attendence was pretty decent, and the food was finished faster than how long Shrek takes to finish a game of pool. So overall, it was good!

So that basically concludes the activities our awesome block will be having this sem. And if you think this sem's activities have been awesome, dun be shocked when i tell you: NEXT SEM'S ACTIVITIES WILL BE EVEN MORE AWESOME!! =D =D =D So when you come back next sem, bring back your smile, your crazy attitude and a heart of love to make the next half of your hall life to be more fun, more exciting and more crazzzzzzzzy!!

To sum up my first Sem in Block E, i must say it has been an experience i didn't expect to have. To be honest, when i first got a place in Sheares Hall, the first word that i fell in love immediately was: Phantom. But clearly, things did not go the way i expect it to be. Coz i am in Block Comm, Volleyball, Volleyball TM and Sheares Dance. I am sure that is nowhere close to being phantom. lol. But still, i enjoyed my life in Hall, excluding the late night ponding sessions, which i still feel is lame, a waste of time and natural resources.

And i realised, most importantly, is how this is the first time i have to stay and work with people younger than me. People may say, "Aiya, only 1-2 years only, very big difference meh?" But in actual fact, there is! The different mentality, the different maturity level, the different way of handling things really made my hall life very different. It's not a bad thing. =) In fact, it made learn. Of course, there are people who dun behave their age, eg Younger age, more mature. Older age, more childish. So when all the different characters mix, it gets very interesting. =)

And of course, thru hall life, i learnt how to take care of people, which will be very useful in my nursing career inthe future. Through my role as TM and level rep, plus the fact that all of them are younger than me, i learn to be a more caring person towards people around me. But i realised i need to apply that to guys around me as well. =p Doesn't mean they are older means they dun need care and concern. Hmmm...
Ok, shall stop blabbling now and leave all of you some space for thought. Maybe my experience can help you guys come up with some reflections of your own too. =) Oh, before i end of, just wanna wish everyone:

ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR COMING EXAMS! STUDY HARD, STUDY SMART AND DO THE BEST YOU CAN!!!

Cheers!
Henry =)

For you, I will (:

Hello Eekers! (:
With endless hall and block events, sports trainings, comm. meetings atop of the ever hectic academic life, i dont know whether you guys ask yourself this question: Is whatever i do in Hall worth it? Like a previous JCRC said, most of the time at the end, its a thankless job and no matter how hard you try at your job, people just dont see it. You can do whatever you want, but dont get lost. Are you lost now?

Ever since i took up vice-blockhead, this question has always been on my mind. Is my responsibility pushing me to come back for events, attend the meetings, worry about my committee, or is it that invisible thing called Passion? there are many times when i will think to myself: If i didnt have block comm in yr 1, i wont be stuck in this commitee for 2 yrs. i could have known more people in other blocks by joining other commitees. i will have so much more time for my family and my friends. i dont need to sleep very little and study on buses just to study like normal undergrads. if i didnt have Hall, i can go out anytime i want and just be free. Dont you think its abit crazy to sms weicong more than you msg your bf?

Then i thought of the times i  did some Puma decoration for publicity for chinese new year with the block comm, lorry supper around singapore, the times i realise i am lacking of something and i announce it, then this thing will magically appear because my neighbours will lend me theirs, when im sick and someone's taking care of me with vitamin C and panadol, getting dinner for me from comm hall, switching off the lights for me and closing my door, decorating my door with sweet notes, receiving smses of appreciation from Level 5, actually knowing Colin more because theres more interaction with our RF,

These memories really make me very happy. And i am very glad that I have them. And i found this memories while doing all the "tiring" things in Hall. And i dont want to let these memories disappear. I love these experiences, which is why i wanted to do block comm again. Because I know many more people in the block instead of just the few i am close to. And this year, for all the events we have organised, i feel damn proud of what we have achieved. And the times when i feel unappreciated, i know that my level rep( Janeyin from last year) will always be there for me. Colin, Brenda, Amelia, Dhinesh, WEICONG THE DAMN ZAI BLOCKHEAD and so many other people will be there for me.

Of course The decline in Hall Spirit is evident, no one can deny this. With every batch that comes in, we place hope in them that this place we call home will not die. But we cannot just hope that they alone can change. Why will they want to contribute when they see seniors reluctant and weak in spirit? I'm happy that our seniors have been coming down more often for events, but we can definitely do better! :D

But more importantly, i sincerely hope the freshies in Block E will bond the block together. There are only 30plus seniors in Block E, and about 70 plus freshies. Who else you know besides who is on your level? Do you know who stays next to ChunKang on Level 6? What about who stays in Level 1? even if you dont know, just opening your door can make a great deal of difference. (: come to events, have fun!

In conclusion, i hope that if you feel lost, talk it out with someone. I cannot change the way you think, all i can do is to show you what makes up my Sheares Hall Block E experience. And hope that it makes you want to get yours too. Because it is really unforgettable. And yes, it is worth it. (: You people reading this now makes it all worth it, my block comm, colin, weicong, brenda, amelia, janeyin, jessie, seeing sonia enjoying sheares hall, makes it all worth it (:

SORRY FOR SOME INCOHERENCE. I JUST WANTED TO BLOG WHATS ON MY MIND.or if it doesnt make sense!

Belated post on Buaya Week

Hello Eekers! SO SORRY for posting so late on the updates to the events that have passed by so quickly these few weeks! >.< Here’s the belated post on Buaya Week!

At the start, the block committee had to Buaya the block first! So posters were put up at every level to depict the different themes…
 andeehong sonia andeehong liting
Unfortunately I don’t have all of the posters to show! Any kind soul have pictures of the other posters to send me? ;)

Followed by the decorations of each level…

After much effort was made by the block committee, it was time for Buaya Week to OPEN! And Eekers started to put up their own decorations for their Buayees…

Many were pretty…

while others had EFFORT written all over them…

Quite a lot of printer ink was spent as well…

And here are some…hmm how should I put it? “Interesting”?

So one week passed by faster than you can say “BUAYA!” All those relentless decorating done by the Eekers had to come to an end as all Buayas were revealed to their fellow Buayees on Buaya Week Closing! Henry was the I/C btw.

The Buayas and Buayees also had to exchange gifts with each other!

And may I present to you Block E Buaya King and Queen 2010 – Lymon and Sonia!

So Buaya Week came to a rather sweet ending, didn’t it? It brought together Eekers from different levels and new friendships were definitely formed! I can also bet that quite a few sparks of love were ignited! ;)

Coming up will be the updates to Block E MAF + MAF with KR! Stay tuned!

Siyao signing off!
